Great article. I've done this for years as part of the Ignatius Spiritual Exercises but never really shared this tool as part of the prayer time with our kids. I WILL now!! Excellent format and guidance above. The examen and all together at the dinner table. That is a great combination!! Thanks again,

Peace,
Brian

Thank you for sharing this! We've been doing #1 as part of our prayers each night and it's really heartwarming to hear even my 2yo thank God for a list of things like the ice cream and watching TV, etc. I will probably gradually add one of the other questions to our routine until we get to do the whole examen. Thanks again!

I liked your reminder that young children are very concrete. When my nephew was a wee one, his mom asked the children at the end of a blistering hot day what they were most thankful for, and he said, "Juice."

I think that this examen is a very good way to talk with children or young people . Often parents aren't able to have a dialogue with their children and so they don't know what makes them happy.

Cynthia, I found your section on the examen for the family eerily similar so something I have been practicing every so often with my 3 year old daughter. I am excited to find ways to incorporate thoughful reflection into her life. I even used the exact phrase "What made you happy or sad today?" It was a great consolation reading your article. Thanks.
